With option to learn American or UK cursive style

Designed by a handwriting specialist to help children become confident and fluent cursive hand writers. The methodology has been used successfully in schools for over five years.

Print and Cursive Upper Case

This app helps children learn to write Print and Cursive upper case letters. Some Upper Case cursive style letters have variants so a number of alternative cursive letter styles are provided in the Settings function of the app.

How it Works

Write Upper Case provides three selectable activities:

1. Writing Letters
2. Paint a Letter
3. Practise your Writing

Writing Letters

A Printed or Cursive alphabet can be selected for writing practise.

When a letter is selected the ‘layers/strokes’ of the letter are displayed and demonstrated.

Cursive

The user is shown the layers/strokes of the letter and how to construct it.

Then the user is asked to place the layers/strokes in the correct order to write the letter correctly. This activity is monitored by the app and the user is encouraged and congratulated on successfully placing the layers in the correct sequence.

The next stage is to practise writing the letter starting with a pencil demonstrating how this is done. The user is then presented with the outline of the letter and arrows indicating where to start writing using a finger or stylus. The user is also given the direction of travel for the layers. The app monitors the activity and encourages the user until the letter is successfully written. The letter can be repeated or the user can move on to the next letter of the alphabet. As some cursive letters only have one layer/stroke, there is no requirement to demonstrate or learn the layers/strokes sequence and so for single layer letters the activity moves straight onto writing practice.

Printed

The routine is similar to the Cursive activity without the overlays characteristic of cursive handwriting. Again, as some printed letters have just one layer, there is no requirement to demonstrate or learn the ‘layers/strokes’ sequence and so for single layer letters the activity moves straight to writing practice.

Paint a Letter

This activity is designed to help reinforce the users learning by providing a ‘fun’ sequence where children can paint the letters selecting from a range of colours and paint brushes. Use the Back function to select another letter to paint.

Practise Your Writing

This activity helps consolidate learning. It displays a template of the selected letter in one of four boxes each of which can be used for writing the selected letter without further help. The letter can be written with either a finger or stylus.
